Saturday, May 10, 2008 (Dependent on the Snow Level)

 

Friends of the Forest Day at Mount St. Helens: Join us as we go Ape in a Cave (Forest Road 8303: ApeCave and Trail of Two Forests)

 

Project involves cleaning up ApeCave lava tube, clearing winter storm debris and preparing trails and facilities for the upcoming season.  Meet at ApeCave parking lot at 9:00 am on Saturday, May 10, 2008.  Volunteers should bring work gloves and be prepared for high mountain weather.  Following the work party there will be an optional guided tour of ApeCave.

Celebrate the 28th Anniversary of the 1980 Eruption

(State Route 504: Johnston Ridge Observatory/Coldwater Lake)

 

Help celebrate the 28th Anniversary of the 1980 eruption and protect natural recovery northwest of the Volcano.  Project involves clearing winter storm debris and repairing trail tread on the Hummocks and Birth of the Lake Trails to prepare them for use by students during the busy spring field trip season.  Meet at the Hummocks Trail parking lot at 9:00 am on Saturday, May 17, 2008 with your work gloves.  Following the work party at 3:30 pm there will be an optional guided geology/ecology hike on the Hummocks Trail and potluck.  Stay the night and help remove scotch broom in the morning on Sunday, May 18, 2008.  On Sunday afternoon, volunteers are invited to join us at the Johnston Ridge Observatory as we celebrate the 28th Anniversary of the eruption with a special slide presentation by Joe Walden, USGS Scientist.

Celebrate Trails Week at Mount St. Helens

(Forest Road 81: Kalama Horse Camp)

 

Work will include clearing storm debris and repairing hiking trails and facilities southwest of Mount St. Helens.  Efforts will focus on the Toutle, Goat Marsh, and Kalama Ski.  Meet with work gloves at Kalama Horse Camp lot at 9:00 am.  The work party will by followed by a volunteer appreciation barbecue and potluck at Kalama Horse Camp.

Summer Solstice Spectacular!

(Forest Road 90: LewisRiver Recreation Area)

 

Start the summer off right!  Help maintain trails in the old-growth forests of the Lewis River Recreation Area.  Work will involve clearing storm debris and repairing trail tread and facilities southeast of Mount St. Helens.  Efforts will focus on the LewisRiver, MiddleFalls and Big Creek Falls Trails.  Meet at PineCreekWorkCenter parking lot in front of the closed information stand at 9:00 am.  Volunteers should bring work gloves.  The work party will be followed by a potluck at the PineCreekWorkCenter.  Bring along your favorite potluck dish to share.

Third Annual Mount St. Helens Weed Rodeo

(State Route 504: Johnston Ridge Observatory/Coldwater Lake)

 

Project involves hand removal of scotch broom, seedlings, and other invasive, noxious weeds from areas near our trails and visitor centers.  Registration begins at 9:00 am.  The work party continues until 3:30 pm.  Following the “weed pull” there will be a tour of Johnston Ridge Observatory with Monument Scientist Peter Frenzen to view and learn about the volcanic crater and impacts of the recent eruption on the crater glacier.  The first 30 participants to arrive will receive a weed rodeo polo shirt.  Join us after the work party for a potluck dinner.

Mid-Summer Volcano Work Party

(Forest Road 99: Windy Ridge Area Trails & Viewpoints)

 

Help repair trails and facilities northeast of Mount St. Helens.  Work will involve clearing storm debris and repairing trail tread and facilities along Forest Road 99 in the 1980 blast zone.  Efforts will focus on the HarmonyFalls, Independence Ridge and TrumanTrails.  Meet with work gloves at the CascadePeaks parking lot at 9:00 am.  The work party will be followed by a volunteer appreciation barbecue and potluck at the Mount St. Helens Institute’s Cascade Peaks Facility.

Friends of the Forest Weekend at Mount St. Helens

(State Route 504: Johnston Ridge Observatory/Coldwater Lake)

 

Help repair storm damaged trails and facilities northwest of the Volcano.  Work will involve clearing storm debris and repairing trail tread and facilities in the vicinity of ColdwaterLake and Johnston Ridge.  Efforts will focus on the Boundary, South Coldwater and Lakes Trails.  Meet at the ColdwaterLake parking lot at 9:00 am on Saturday, August 2, 2008.  Volunteers should bring work gloves.  For volunteers interested in working both days, there will be an optional Saturday potluck dinner and camp out at our employee housing area.  Work party volunteers are also invited to attend our Saturday night Mount St. Helens Stargazing Spectacular Field Seminar with Vancouver Sidewalk Astronomers at no cost.

Be A Star!!

(Forest Road 99: Windy Ridge Area Trails and Viewpoints)

 

Help repair storm damaged trails northeast of Mount St. Helens and join us for stargazing spectacular.  Camp out during the peak night of the Perseids Meteor Shower.  Work will involve clearing winter storm debris, repairing trail tread and facilities along Forest Road 99 in the 1980 blast zone.  Efforts will focus on the Boundary Trail in the vicinity of NorwayPass.  Meet at CascadePeaks at 9:00 am.  Volunteers should bring work gloves.  The work party will be followed by a volunteer appreciation potluck and barbecue.  Please then join us for a camp-out under the stars and moon to view the peak night of the Perseids Meteor Shower.

Celebrate National Public Lands Day at Mount St. Helens

 

Join us as we celebrate National Public Lands Day and clean up the headwaters of the East Fork of the LewisRiver.  Help restore streamside vegetation and repair area trails and facilities.  This is a continuation of our ongoing effort to “Take Back the East Fork” and create a clean, green, family friendly atmosphere along one of our most heavily used river corridors.  Volunteers should bring gloves and meet at the SunsetFalls parking lot at 10:00 am.  Following the work party there will be a barbecue and potluck dinner.
