Once upon a time Mount St. Helens reigned over the skyline of Oregon and Washington. She wore a cloak of pristine snow and often cast her peaceful image in the crystal countenance of Spirit Lake. People from around the area lived, played and enjoyed what most referred to as the Mount Fuji of America.

Then on a bright Sunday morning, May 18, 1980, a sharp earthquake grabbed the mountain by the shoulders and shook her. Instantly this caused the largest landslide in recorded history. A vertical blast blew ash 16 miles (25 kms) into the atmosphere, and the lateral blast, gaining speeds in excess of 650 miles per hour, destroyed enough timber (trees) needed to build 300 two bedroom homes. Once a picture perfect mountain peak, Mount St. Helens lost 1300 feet of it's top and devastated 110,000 acres of mature fir forest.
Today you can experience nature's destructive and regenerative powers by visiting Mount St. Helens located just two hours south of Seattle, Washington. Nature has dramatically changed the landscape around Mount St. Helens. Eighteen years ago there was no sign of life. Today you can enjoy the flora and fauna. You and your family can learn of the eruption that forever changed the lives of people and created a living laboratory for mankind.
