GENERAL HUNTING INFORMATION - COWLITZ COUNTY

Our county is rich with wild game, including, but not limited to:  deer, elk, black bear, cougar, wild turkey and migratory waterfowl.  There are also several methods of hunting, which include:  rifle, bow and arrow, and muzzleloader.

The thrill of the hunt!!  Now all that needs to be done is find out where to go to get that trophy kill and what it will take to get it.  Below are some key points that should help the prospective hunter get started.

First of all, a hunting license is necessary to hunt any wild game in Cowlitz County.  License requirements and fees are set by the Washington State Legislature, and are based on an April 1 - March 31 license year, not a calendar year.  For information on options and fees call the Licensing Division at 1-360-902-2464.  You may also purchase recreational hunting and fishing licenses via the Internet at:

Washington State Department of Fish & Wildlife There are no senior citizen discounts on hunting licenses.

Several restrictions apply regarding requirements to hunt in our county.  These include an individual providing proof that they have completed a hunter education class or that they are not first-time hunting license buyers.  A Washington license from a previous year is considered legal proof if the hunter is still in good standing.  (Special regulations concerning firearms possession may apply to non-U.S. citizens).  Youth (16 and under) are eligible for reduced license fees.  Licenses may be purchased at over 600 license dealers across the state.

Remember, when hunting in Cowlitz County, or anywhere else for that matter, show respect for the environment and wildlife.  Obtain proper tags and licenses, hunt only in allowed areas and know its boundaries.  Show respect for the animals you hunt by taking only clean, killing shots, then retrieving and properly handling your game.  Learn to tread lightly, use vehicles only on established roads and trails, pack out your trash, and practice low-impact camping and travel.  Report illegal activities immediately by calling, toll-free: 1-877-945-3492, or report on the Internet at:

The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement

Respect property and always get permission to hunt on private property.  Remember that the future of hunting depends upon you and your conduct.  Exercise caution at all times - fire your gun or bow only when you are absolutely sure of your target.  Use binoculars, not your riflescope, to identify your target.  Wear hunter orange whenever appropriate.  Know and obey the law, and use only legal hunting methods and equipment.

Attend a hunter education course, and urge others to do the same.  Know the limitations of your skills and hunt within those limits.

REMEMBER, YOU CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE.
